Unwavering faith is something that I witnessed and experienced a lot growing up. I attribute the foundation of my relationship with God to the level of faith that I was continuously exposed to from such a young age.
What is unwavering faith?
To have a strong faith in the Lord that does not falter in the face of opposition. The definition of unwavering is continuing in a strong and steady way. The definition of steady is firm in position or showing little fluctuation or variation.
This is not the kind of faith we have in ourselves. We know that we fail, we are unreliable and lean too heavily on our emotions. I can hardly trust myself to keep my mouth shut when tested, or implement new habits like drink more water (and that only takes 3 weeks to do!). No, this faith is a faith rooted in, supplied to us, and driven by God himself. Think about it! Your faith in God, and his faithfulness to His promises is what is giving you enough confidence to have unwavering faith.
The kind of faith that continues in a steady way even when the strong winds come; The kind that stands firm in position despite what is thrown its way.
The power of unwavering faith
Having not been raised in church, I never knew the Bible stories, children’s songs, or specific verses growing up. However, I had witnessed my family’s unwavering faith carry them through the hardest of times.
My family is full of amazing prayer warriors and watching them praising God through their storms taught me to recognize the presence of God and the power of faith-filled prayers.
We often hear about the power of prayer. But it is important to remember that the driving force behind the powerful prayers that move the heart and hand of God is faith!
Matthew 17:20 tells us that if we have faith as a grain of mustard seed we could tell a mountain to move and it will! And nothing shall be impossible unto us! We serve a gracious God! He does not even require a lot of faith from us. He requires just a little bit of that wholesome, untouchable, unconditional, and unwavering faith to move mountains.
Your unwavering faith is formed in secret
The Lord grows us in private and then uses us to get the glory! Our mountains, and valleys are what God uses to build our faith and trust in Him. In the midst of our despair is not the time to seek counsel from everyone on social media, the prayer groups, and the friends you lean on every week that truly don’t help at all with your struggles. Take it to the one who can actually do something and cast your cares on Him!
Proverbs 8:14 says “Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.” God himself is our source of strength, knowledge, and wisdom.
Matthew 6:6 tells us “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”
In the middle of your storm when it feels lonely and hopeless is the very time to privately seek the Lord in His word. Listen for that still small voice in fervent prayer. The more you seek God, the more you want to seek Him. The more you pray and date Christ, the more you desire and hunger for His word!
Then you look back later to find that you’re out of the valley but you’re all the better for it! The best part is that you enter your next trial with roots deep in the Word and promises of God. These roots are so strong, steady, and confident is His faithfulness that they are able to withstand the strongest of storms!
This kind of faith speaks for itself
The second part of that verse in Matthew 6:6 says “thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”
A perfect example of this is the woman with the issue of blood.
She suffered at the hands of physicians and spent every last penny she had. This woman had desperately tried it all over the course of 12 years and was only getting worse!
She had heard of Jesus and knew in her heart that he could heal her (“she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.” Matt 9:21). She had determined in her heart that He was her hope. That firm position of faith drove her straight into the multitude to reach Jesus.
She knew that if she could just touch the hem of his garment, she would be healed. I can hear the desperation and feel the overwhelming sense of hope as she got closer.
Luke 8:46 says “And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.”
This woman had such reverence for the Lord and such faith that Jesus sensed when she touch his clothing! He picked her out of the entire multitude and the bunches of people that were brushing up against him.
Full fledged, “I need Jesus and nothing less”, unwavering faith, will speak for itself when healing comes and Jesus himself says “thy faith hath made thee whole”.
It wasn’t her actions (works) that moved Jesus, but her faith! Her motivator and driving force to diligently and persistently seek him despite her condition, social status, economic status, physical appearance etc. It was her unwavering faith that touched His heart that day.
Ok cool…but what if I don’t have that?
James 4:8 tell us to “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you”. It is a matter of you seeking the Lord by your own will and your own choice. You need to do it genuinely wanting Christ himself and not only seeking Him for what you know He can do for you.
If your motives aren’t right, then ask the Lord to purify your heart! Ask him to purify your motives and put in your heart a desire for Him and nothing less!
Hebrews 10:22-23 says “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)”
It is clearly there! I mean wow! Ask for the purification of your heart and ask for the faith as you draw near!
Remember that trials will still come
James 1:5-7 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.”
The trials are coming, the question is do you want to suffer through them alone, or rejoice with the Lord in worship through them?
I want to encourage you to be very honest with yourself and the Lord. Ask Him to inspect and purify your heart. Then ask for a steady, unwavering faith that will carry you through the hardest trials that you will endure.
Unwavering faith isn’t perfect faith. It is tried and tested faith that has learned through experience that God is and has always been faithful. It is asking and waiting, asking and receiving, asking and worshipping while patiently putting God’s will above our own because He is faithful!

Thank you for these words of encouragement! Remembering that God’s will us all that really matters is so hard for us humans…I’m learning to understand God more and more through my children and how I parent them. I just have to trust what God is asking me to do, even if I don’t understand. Thanks for sharing!
