Doing a Biblical word study can seem overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be! Here is a comprehensive list of physical and online Biblical word study tools that will make your word study enjoyable and fruitful!
Free Online Biblical word study tools
There are plenty of websites and apps out there that consolidate a lot of this information into one place so you aren’t rummaging through large dictionaries and concordances.
Doing a Biblical word study with these resources is so fast! I can typically get it done in just a few minutes! If you don’t know how to do a Biblical word study, I break it down into 10 very easy steps and provide a FREE Biblical study worksheet to facilitate the process for you!
1. Blue Letter Bible
My preference is blueletterbible.org since it is what I became accustomed to while studying in Bible college.
2. Bible Hub
biblehub.com is another free online bible study tool that comes highly recommended by many who do in depth Bible studies.
3. Study Light
studylight.org has many of the same resources as both blue letter bible and bible hub.
Physical Biblical word study tools
1. Dictionaries
For a great, in depth biblical word study, you will need dictionaries to provide you with many different perspectives in defining the word. This way, you are able to get a more well-rounded definition and a full picture of the meaning of your chosen word.
You will need a Bible dictionary that is similar to an encyclopedia. In the definition it gives you, it also provides general background and information relating the word to the Bible.
It helps better understand people, places, objects, and events in the Bible.
You will also need a secular dictionary. This will give you a different perspective of the definition of the word you’re studying.
2. Concordance
An interlinear concordance is a great resource that guides you through what is actually in the Bible. So if you do a Biblical word study for the word “love”, it will give you a reference number (Strong’s number).
It will then show you all the other places in scripture where that word with that specific number appears.
3. Lexicon
A lexicon will show you the Hebrew or Greek origin for the word you are doing a word study on. Truth be told, I do not own this one, because I am able to find all the information I need in the Strong’s concordance.
Bible word study tools
Whether you’re using the free options online, or you purchased them, these are invaluable resources that are guaranteed to transform the way you study the Word of God.
The important thing here is conducting an effective biblical word study. So don’t worry about having the best of the best! If you’re like me, you prefer a printed copy. Don’t break the bank for this!
I’m all about being a good steward of our finances. Look for these resources at thrift shops, consignment shops, Facebook marketplace, ebay etc. You’re bound to find someone selling a “like new” copy for much cheaper than brand new.
