What is vanilla simple syrup?

Simple syrup is a homemade sweetener that can be added to coffee, lemonade, fruit, sorbet, or even be drizzled over pancakes. Since it is a liquid, it also blends well for smoothies or frozen drinks!

Ingredients

Part of what I love most about this vanilla simple syrup recipe is just that, its simplicity. You only need:

  1. White sugar
  2. Brown sugar
  3. Water
  4. Vanilla extract

These are ingredients that your average household keeps on hand. So even if you are in a pinch, no need to run to the grocery store for complicated, hard to find, or specialty ingredients!

Note: The general rule of thumb is a 1:1 ratio of water to sugar. To make it sweeter, add more sugar (hence the additional 1/2 cup)

Also, both brown and white sugar are not necessary. You can use either just brown or just white for the entire measurement of sugar.

Instructions

  1. Bring water to a simmer
  2. Add sugars
  3. Once dissolved, remove from heat. Add vanilla extract and mix
  4. Place in glass jar, let cool completely. Store in the refrigerator.

It is that simple!

How to store simple syrup?

Once completely cooled, store your vanilla syrup in an airtight container. Keep in the refrigerator for up to three weeks!

My favorite way to use this vanilla syrup is in a hot vanilla latte for my mid day energy boost!

There are several uses for simple syrup!

  • It can be added to cakes to make them more moist
  • hot, iced or frozen coffee drinks
  • lemonade
  • sorbet
  • smoothies
  • drizzled over pancakes or waffles
  • served on top of fruit for a little added sweetness
  • I have even used this to help sweeten oatmeal
